How large is Huntley and what is the population?
Currently, Huntley's corporate limits encompass 14.22 square miles of
land area, with a certified Census population of 23,229 residents.
The Village's 1990 Census population was 2,453 and the 2000 Census number was
5,730. A Special Census in 2008 revealed the population to be 23,229, that's a
405% increase in growth since the Census figures of 2000! The
Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning estimates the population will rise to
44,435 by year 2030.

Huntley is a non-home rule municipality. The Village is governed by an elected President
(Mayor) and a six (6) member Board of Trustees. The Village President and Board of Trustees are elected at-large to four (4) year, staggered terms.

Although Huntley straddles 2 counties, the
Village Board recently adopted the McHenry County Open Burning Ordinance to
cover ALL property within the Village.
Due to the relatively small size of residential lots in Huntley, leaf burning is
now essentially illegal for the vast majority of homeowners within Village
limits.

Do I need to register my pet with the Village? The Village of Huntley does not require pet licensing. However, both Kane and
McHenry Counties do require valid rabies tags for all dogs in the County.
Typically, when you take your pet to the veterinarian for rabies vaccination,
the veterinarian's office will have all the paperwork and pertaining information
on obtaining the rabies tags from McHenry or Kane County. You can also

Does Huntley
levy a property tax?
Yes. The Village of Huntley’s share of a real estate tax bill is approximately
6.14%. When compared to other municipalities in the area, Huntley’s tax rate is
one of the lowest at 0.4154 per $100 of assessed valuation.

When are snow
plows sent out?
The Public Works Department will begin plowing the Village streets when there
are
two (2) inches or more snowfall.

My mailbox
was knocked down during snow removal. What does the Village cover?
The Village will replace damaged mailboxes with standard issue boxes provided
that the original mailbox was placed in compliance with Village Regulations and
was actually hit by the plow truck. If your box or post was damaged, please
contact Public Works at (847) 669-3450 to report the damage. Two replacement
options are available:
1.
The Village will replace your box, post, or both, depending on
the damage, with a standard product. This consists of a standard metal mailbox
and wooden 4’x4’ post. You do have the option to have a more expensive model
installed by the Village, but you must pay any cost above the $45.00 maximum
allotted by the Village. This $45.00 consists of $25.00 for the mailbox and
$20.00 for the post. If you decide to purchase your own mailbox and have the
Village install it, you must call the Public Works Administration Department at
847-669-3450 before May 31, 2009 to set up an appointment.
2.
You may replace the box yourself and allow the Village to
reimburse you for the cost of the replacement. With this option you must,
again, stay within the $45.00 allotted by the Village ($25.00 for the mailbox
and $20.00 for the post). You can also install a more expensive mailbox and
post, but you will be reimbursed a maximum of $45.00. Remember to follow the
installation requirements
if you install your own mailbox.
