Route 47 Update
December 12, 2011

Information is provided by IDOT
and is subject to change

Great news!! All Route 47 Thru Lanes are now OPEN! Please continue to watch for construction workers over the winter installing street lighting and traffic control signals with occasional single lane closures. Remain alert and watch your speed, Route 47 through the project remains posted a 35 MPH construction zone.

Please note: The new Route 47 lane configurations are designed to keep traffic flowing freely. Part of this design includes non-mountable medians that restrict left turns onto Route 47 in certain locations (and may not be visible under snow). Please take your time now to familiarize yourself with new in and out access points to businesses.

What’s Next? While there is cause to celebrate the opening of the new lanes, it does not mean the project is complete. IDOT officials granted the contractor an extension until June 2012 to complete the work.

Reminder: It is against the law in Illinois for drivers to talk on cell phones in construction zones.  There are only 3 exceptions for talking on a cell phone in a construction zone:
- The driver is using a Bluetooth device;
- The driver has the cell phone on speaker phone and is not holding the device; or
- The driver is calling 911 to report an emergency situation.

The village will continue to post Route 47 construction updates as information becomes available from IDOT. The IDOT updates will be posted to this website: Route 47 Widening Project website

The Village Board and Staff are committed to do everything possible to keeping you well informed and helping in whatever ways possible during this time as the final product of a widened Route 47 will benefit all of us in the future.

Safety Alert
Pedestrians and bicyclists are urged to stay out of construction zones along Route 47.  Highway construction zones are extremely hazardous.  Please stay safe.

Be a Courteous Driver

As construction continues, the Route 47 project will continue to create large traffic back-ups. In light of this, please remember to be courteous to drivers around you and do your best to refrain from blocking driveway access to commercial businesses.

Local Traffic Only

Many residents and business have voiced their confusion regarding the posted 'Local Traffic Only" signs that have been placed throughout the Village.  Some worry they might get a ticket if they don't live on the street.  The truth is, the streets are public. Everyone has the legal right to drive on these streets and you can't get a ticket for Local Traffic Only. If you are visiting a friend or on your way to one of our many fine businesses, by all means use the local streets to get to your destination.

The Local Traffic Only signs are posted as a deterrent in order to keep cut-thru traffic to a minimum during the Route 47 Widening Project, and reduce the impact on our neighborhoods.  Please remember to drive the posted speed limits and watch out for children at play.  Police will be increasing their presence in these neighborhoods and speeding tickets will be issued, when warranted.
